Redefining Leadership
Reimagining Appalachia
The Why
Coalfields & Cobblestones exists to give new perspective to people in a region where few have the opportunity to travel abroad. By experiencing other places that have faced hardship and rebirth, participants return home ready to reimagine what’s possible in Appalachia.
These shared experiences build confidence in young adults from different walks of life, helping them grow as leaders, thinkers, and problem solvers. This approach will help foster leadership that is grounded, creative, and connected to the world.
As we travel with young adults from across the mountains, we are redefining how others see us and how we see ourselves. Over time, regions whose only perception of the United States is LA or NYC will get to know people from Appalachia who come to their city with curiosity and respect. By creating these global experiences we will improve perceptions of our region to the world, and broaden our regions understanding of the world.
These connections and newly discovered commonalities will open new doors for economic growth. Across the world, U.S. allies are looking for places to invest but often struggle to build the relationships needed to enter American markets. Coalfields & Cobblestones can change that. By building real, people-to-people connections, we can position Appalachia as an international destination for businesses and regions that, like us, have been underestimated for too long.
The Who
Coalfields & Cobblestones initial programs will be open to any 18-28 year old with roots in Appalachia who is ready to learn, explore, and be uncomfortable. GPA’s, test scores, or diplomas will not be selection criteria. What we will evaluate is curiosity, a desire to see how the world works, and a passion to build a stronger Appalachia.
